Despite the obvious increase in size, the so called Smaaart was built using a lightweight allow chassis therefore allowing it to retain the original 600cc engine without sacrificing motorways speeds up to 80 mph.

beetle-police.jpgMARYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Blount County’s newest police cruiser has been turning heads, but whether it could keep up in a high-speed chase seems unlikely.

Assistant Chief Deputy Archie Garner retrofitted a 1973 Volkswagen Beetle to add to the sheriff’s fleet of police interceptors, but with a top-end speed of about 70 mph, he’s not writing a lot of speeding tickets.

Russias Lada Niva goes submarine

Posted on Nov 01 2007 by admin | Posted under Lada | No Comments »

Niva has been in prouction since beginning of 1970s. Not much has changed in the appearance. It started with a 1.3 liter engine and a soft top. Then in 1974 the egine was upgraded to 1.6. The car has been exported to nearly hundred countries.
It has even raced on Paris Dakar Rally. There have been different modifications for the army, but most of them never went into production as Soviet Union collapsed and the so called “al mighty” Red army had no recourses to buy them.
During 90s Niva went through a fe modifications. It got a 1.7 liter engine, new dash and new lights. Overall look did not change much. In addition some models got a 1.9l diesel engine from Peugeot.

Now look at this video of Niva going submarine:

This is no ordinary Niva, but it shows how “foolproof” Russias automobiles can be with little upgrades.

VW microbus limousine!

vw-bus-limo-1.jpgImagine owning a bus like this on the 60s! Even now it would be a blast to own a bus like this. Wonder what are the mods on engine. The original bus is not very powerful and with extra weight it definitely would lack power. Anyway those engines on old beetles have been modified to run quarter miles faster than most production cars so anything is possible. Add a roof rack and you are all set for the next surfing trip!
